Eric Adams Crypto: Former NYC Mayor Will Fight Antisemitism With Bitcoin

Outgoing New York City mayor Eric Adams is not easing quietly into private life. In one of his final public appearances, Adams said his next chapter will include using cryptocurrency as a tool to combat antisemitism, violence, and educational inequality.

It was a striking claim, delivered without technical detail, but heavy on symbolism.

“I also want to use cryptocurrency to go after violence, educate our children, and really deal with antisemitism that we’re seeing globally,” said Eric Adams.

Adams has made fighting antisemitism a central theme of his administration, often pointing out that Jewish New Yorkers are targeted in hate crimes more than any other group combined. With mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani set to take office on January 1, Adams framed his post-City Hall plans as both moral and technological.

Adams offered no specifics, but the implication is clear. Blockchain rails are increasingly used for transparent funding, donor tracking, and censorship-resistant payments, so, in theory, the plan could be more than hypothetical. Moreover, crypto has been used to support educational grants, cross-border advocacy, or rapid funding for at-risk communities.

In practice, however, New York is one of the most restrictive crypto jurisdictions in the United States.

The New York State Department of Financial Services enforces the BitLicense regime, which requires any crypto business touching New Yorkers to meet stringent capital, AML, cybersecurity, and reporting standards. That framework has driven major platforms out of the state and sharply limited experimentation beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Bitcoin and Ethereum remain the only cryptoassets broadly approved for institutional custody in New York, reinforcing how painful regulation is in NYC.

Crypto excels at transparency and programmability, but continues to chafe with public perception and regulatory friction.

Whether this becomes a serious initiative or a rhetorical flourish depends on what Adams does before Mamdani succeeds him. Mamdani hasn’t clarified his crypto stance yet, seeing as he wants to deal with immediate wealth inequality problems like sky-high grocery and rent prices, Bitcoin won’t be something he prioritizes yet.
