Jack Dorsey-led Block, which operates Square and Bitkey, announced today it will integrate Bitcoin payments into Square’s platform, with plans to complete the rollout to all eligible sellers next year.

The company is introducing the new feature at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, allowing attendees to test the payment system at the BTC Inc. merchandise store.

Powered by the Lightning Network, Square’s Bitcoin payments system enables merchants to accept Bitcoin payments through their Square hardware, offering near-instantaneous, low-cost transactions.

The initial rollout is scheduled for the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals, according to Block.

The new offering is part of the company’s ongoing push to make Bitcoin more accessible and usable for everyday transactions.

Data from Bitcoin Treasuries shows that Block is the tenth-largest corporate Bitcoin holder, owning 8,584 BTC worth $935 million at current market prices.

“Block has long been a champion of Bitcoin, focused on making it more accessible and usable in our everyday lives,” said Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Bloc, in a statement. “Rolling out a native Bitcoin experience to millions of sellers brings us one step closer to that goal. When a coffee shop or retail store can accept Bitcoin through Square, small businesses get paid faster and get to keep more of their revenue.”

The feature builds upon Block’s expanding suite of Bitcoin-related products and services, including Square’s Bitcoin Conversion feature, Cash App’s Bitcoin services, Bitkey’s self-custody wallet, Proto’s mining products, and Spiral’s open-source projects.

The announcement comes after Dorsey confirmed last month that Block was working on integrating Bitcoin as a payment option for Bitkey and Square. He noted that the integration process was complex and not just a straightforward task.

Block also announced Tuesday that Bitkey is set to introduce new privacy and security features in May, including an inheritance recovery feature for all users.
